Important words/things to know

Ratio (not ration - we're not the army!) : refers to the amount of data that you have uploaded divided by the amount of data downloaded. So if you download a file which is 500MB, and you then upload another 500MB to the swarm, you get a ratio of 500MB/500MB or 1.0. If you have downloaded 5GB, and uploaded 1GB, you will have a ratio of 0.2 as it is 1GB/5GB.

Peer: every person who has something to do with the torrent - be it seeding or leeching.

Upload: The process of putting something on the internet or someone else’s computer.

Download: The process of getting something from the internet or from someone else’s computer onto your computer.

Seed(ing): Seeding simply means uploading. When you download a file you are expected to "Seed" what you have "Leeched", doing this will improve your ratio.

Leech(ing): Leeching is the same as 'downloading'. When you decide to download a file, the file is added to your download amount. If you continually download (leech) more than you upload (seed) then you will end up with a poor ratio and could be banned.

Hit & Run: When you decide to download a file, and stop seeding shortly after the file has been downloaded, this is considered a hit and run, and is considered a bannable offense.

Warning: You will receive a warning when any action you take is considered against the rules. Such cases involve hitting and running, being disrespectful to others, and any other violation in the Rules section

Firewall: Often people put hardware/software devices in between their computer and their internet connection to prevent people from maliciously connecting to their computer. Windows comes with one built in (from XP SP2). These firewalls can interrupt people’s ability to upload and hence seed.

NAT: When internet numbers began to run low, the boffins designed a clever system called Network Address Translation (NAT) which means that you only need 1 IP address no matter how many computers you have behind it. The problem with this is that if you are behind a NAT device, whilst you can see the internet, the internet is unable to see behind the NAT device, meaning that you will be unable to seed.

Port Forwarding: a method to circumvent problems with NAT. Basically it redirects inbound traffic on a given port to a specific computer behind the NAT device. Portforward.com - a site dedicated to teaching you how to carry this out.

Router / Modem: a device that connects your computer to the internet. These devices often have NAT built in. Inadequate Activity: Not downloading or uploading enough to become a full time user but continuing to login and use the site. You have 45 days after registration to download or upload 5GB's before your account will be disabled for this reason.

Hey, I cannot Log in!

If you are having difficulties logging in, and you keep being redirected to the login page, it is because there is a fault with your cookies. This is often because you have some really old ones hanging about that haven't been deleted. You can normally fix this by going to our Cookie Fixing page (it will redirect you to login after it has done). If you still can't login afterwards, try deleting your cookies manually from your browser.

So, what is a share ratio and how do I find out mine?

Look at the user bar:

User Info Bar

Alternatively, if your user class is n00b, User, Power or Ultra Users then you will need to check your profile. So what exactly is a Share Ratio? The Share Ratio works by looking at the total amount you've downloaded compared with the total amount you've uploaded (how much you've leeched and how much you've seeded back).

Example:
Uploaded 250mb Downloaded 500mb (250mb divided by 500mb) is equal to a Share Ratio of 0.5

What this essentially means is you have only shared back half (0.5) of the amount you have downloaded, this isn't good :(. We ask users to maintain a ratio of 1.0+ or as close to 1.0 as possible, this means everyone is happy in a fun sharing world! *Note: Once you have downloaded over 10 gigs you must maintain at least a 0.600 ratio otherwise you will receive a warning, in which you will have 2 weeks to get your ratio up to par.*

Remember that the ratio you see on the user bar or in your profile is for the total amount of data you have downloaded and uploaded. Each torrent you have open will have different share ratio, we then add them all up to give you a total, because we're nice like that.

Example:
  • Torrent 1: Downloaded 250mb, Uploaded 150mb Share Ratio: 0.6
  • Torrent 2: Downloaded 200mb, Uploaded 100mb Share Ratio: 0.5
  • Torrent 3: Downloaded 350mb, Uploaded 350mb Share Ratio 1.0

So overall we have a total of 800mb Downloaded and 600mb Uploaded giving a Share Ratio of 0.75 which is below our requirements, so the key is to share! Just give back what you take, it's so simple.

You may see two symbols instead of a number:
  • "Inf.", which is short for Infinity, and means that you are sharing back without having downloaded anything! You may wonder how this could happen, surely you have to download something to share it? Not necessarily!

Sometimes when you stop a torrent and then resume (e.g. when you shutdown your computer at night and start again in the morning), the torrent program forgets that you have already started that torrent and assumes that you've downloaded nothing but continue to share, meaning an infinite ratio! Note: please don't worry about your upload/download amounts not updating, clients do this for you during your transfer and before you exit.
  • "---" This simply means you haven't downloaded or uploaded anything (your client might not have updated us just yet).

HOW TO MAINTAIN A POSITIVE RATIO

Every time you download a torrent, be sure to seed at least as much as you download and try to seed over and above that as this will get you a nice ratio and make life easier.

    HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR RATIO

Improving a ratio is a lot easier than you think! The best thing to do is simply seed for as long as you can (as explained above). Spotting popular torrents early is a great tactic - you will be one of the first to complete it and have a lot of seeding time. Good examples of popular torrents are big movies and tv shows like: 24, Prison Break, Family Guy, Heroes, House, and Lost are just a few examples.

If you have your own stuff you'd like to share, why not try uploading some torrents. Remember to read the rules before you upload though!

If you're still having problems maintaining a good ratio, please read over the forums section.

Is there a seed bonus anymore?

No. We had a seed bonus for a number of years to increase seeding but during the transition to ST 2.0 we have decided to remove this feature in favor of a better ratio system.

However, rest assured that any seed bonus you had obtained in the past was automatically added to your upload credit so no one actually had anything removed from their stats.

What is this IRC Bonus about?

If you're an active user in our IRC channel than you could receive up to 250MB a day just for chatting! This bonus is only given to those who participate and is based on your overall daily activity in the channel. Bonuses are calculated and rewarded on a daily basis so please allow 24 hours for your stats to update after joining the party! Ready to chat? Make sure you register your IRC nickname before joining our main channel; #supertorrents and be aware that you must use the same nickname on IRC that you use on the site or you will not be credited! If you need help registering your nickname, simply join our support channel at #stsupport and a member of our team will be along to assist you shortly! Note: This is not an idle bonus!

What is this Radio Bonus all about?

STRadio is working with DJ's from around the world to give you a completely live and unique experience while bringing our members from around the world together in an entertaining way. Start listening now and receive your bonus of up to 100MB a day!

The radio bonus, just like the IRC bonus, is very simple. The longer you listen to STRadio, the more bonus upload credit you will receive. You may track your received bonus by checking your profile page or the user bar.

Why can I not login/reach the site?

This problem sometimes happens in Internet Explorer. To solve it, you need to delete any SuperTorrents cookies (found in C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Cookies in Windows XP). Alternatively you can delete all cookies by going into Internet Options and looking in the General tab for the 'Delete Cookies' button. You should then be able to login.

The other reason you may not be able to log in is because you are banned! If you really think you were banned unfairly, come along to IRC and explain your case.

The site blocks addresses listed in the PeerGuardian so if PeerGuardian is blocking you should complain to them yourself. We have no control over who they ban so we cannot help you, sorry.

It's also possible that your account has been automatically deleted for inactivity (this happens when you don't log in for 90 days). For more information check here.

I have lost my user name or password! Can you send it to me?

Please use this form to have the login details mailed back to you. Although that probably won't work as most of our e-mails get blocked.

    Can you rename/delete my account?

Name change requests are available to Donator's and Vip's. If you would like to rename your account, you may put a request in by clicking here. Once a moderator approves your request your name will be changed.

DO NOT invite yourself. Doing so will result in you being BANNED There are occasions where there are unique circumstances where duplicate accounts are permissible, however you MUST seek advice from a Moderator first!

And if for some reason you want to leave us :( then you can do it yourself by using this form.

Why is my IP displayed on my details page?!

We keep the last IP that you used to browse the site in your information to help us spot security issues. Don't worry though, only Moderators, Admins and SysOps can see your IP, along with yourself. Regular users don't have access to your personal information.

How do I add an avatar to my profile?

First, find an image that you like, and that is within the rules. Then you will have to find a place to host it, such as our own BitBucket. (Other popular choices are Photobucket, Upload-It! or ImageShack). All that is left to do is copy the URL you were given when uploading it to the avatar field in your profile.

Alternatively, if you plan to use the forums (and we suggest you do!) simply set your avatar in the forum and it will also set it for the site in general.

Please do not make a post just to test your avatar on the forums. If everything worked ok, you should see your avatar in your details page by selecting your name at the top left.

How Do I Invite My Friends?

If you have any invitations, it will tell you in the User Information Bar:
    User Info Bar

Invites from user class promotions were removed. Do not ask about them. They were all over CNN.

Remember to only invite people you know for real or have known online for a while. DON'T advertise on forums or any other public places as you'll find yourself back to 0 invites or even worse, banned.

How do I actually create an invite code?

When you have invites you can find them in two ways. First if you look in the upper left corner of the web page next to your name you can see there will be a number of invites you can click on and it will take you to the invite page

Secondly you can go to your profile, scroll down till you see the word invites and click on the number next to it. That will take you to the invite page as well.

When you are at the invite page at the bottom, click on the button that says "Create Invite Code" that will bring you to a new page, you can then click on the button "Create"

Once you have done that it will bring you back to the invite page. There, you can delete the invite code and see the status of those people you have invited. The code that is created is what you are going to give to the person you plan on inviting. Just copy and paste this code into an email, chat program, or whatever it is your going to use to send the invite.

Then have that person sign up using that code.

Can I invite someone I live with?

NO! We can not stress this enough. Only one account per IP address (which each household shares between computers) is allowed on SuperTorrents. Staff makes multiple checks on this weekly and you WILL be caught. When you are, all your accounts will be disabled INCLUDING the one with the LOWEST ratio. So your better off not taking any chances.

This includes logging into your friends computer to get an invite for them. We do not know who has each ip, we just see that you have the same ip address, and as such you are very likely to be banned!

It actually makes more sense to share one account if you think about it. Each household has a limited download and upload speed, if your trying to maintain ratios for multiple accounts it becomes much more difficult than if you only had one account. So instead, combine all your downloading and uploading into one account and avoid to fuss.

We do understand that there are exceptional cases or circumstances that warrants having multiple accounts. However do not assume it to be the case. Speak to a member of staff BEFORE you proceed!

Can I login from different computers (Multiple IPs)

Yes, it\'s not a problem, you can now browse and download from different locations. You are identified by your passkey which is coded into the .torrent file you download. Note that we don\'t allow multiple users to share accounts so don't login with too many different IPs or we\'ll be onto you! However, users living together are strongly encouraged to use the same account or risk being banned.

What happens if I do not log in for ages?

Your account will be deleted by the system after 90 days of inactivity. It is your responsibility to log into your account on the site (seeding torrents or being on IRC doesn't count) at least once every 90 days to keep your account. The system automatically does this and cannot be altered by staff. Furthermore, no e-mails or warnings of any kind will be sent out before this happens. If you 'park' your account, this will protect it for 180 days. For more information please check here.

What is this *Park Account* thing and how do I do it?

Left to its own devices, SuperTorrents automatically cleans up (deletes) accounts that have not been accessed in the last 3 months (90 days). As there are some of you who go away for much longer periods than 3 months, we have introduced the ability to park your account.
When parked, it is immune from deletion for 180 days from the moment it is parked. However when it is parked, you are unable to view any of the normal site pages, including the Forums nor are you able to download, or seed torrents.
    How do I do it?
If you decide that you are going to be away for several weeks, you can find the "Park Account" button in the "General" tab of the menu clicking it will take you to This page which will ask you for your login details and your email. When you click "Park", your account is parked, and you are logged out. Next time you go to the index; on the menu, there is a link that you can use when you wish to retrieve your account later on.
Remember, it only holds for 180 days. If you need longer, you will have to retrieve and then re-park your account again.

Do I need to inform staff of a seedbox?

Yes! If you're using a seedbox, or have a very fast home-line connection which you download/seed from then please PM a moderator or come to IRC to speak with one. Be prepared to provide proof of your seedbox, including, but not limited to, screenshots and speed tests.

    What time is it?

On some pages, there are references to times/dates. All dates on Supertorrents are in UTC

Why am I Not Connectable and why does it matter?

SuperTorrents has determined that you are firewalled or NATed. This doesn't mean that you can't download and upload data, but it does mean that you won't reach the best possible speeds and will have a hard time sharing back.

Being unconnectable means that you can initiate connections to others, but they can't initiate connections to you. Also if 2 users are unconnectable they can't connect no matter what. This slows things down for everyone, check the diagram below:

    Unconnectable

So there are 7 people in total, 3 unconnectable and 4 connectable. In this instance, the people can only connect to download from the green connectable users. This can interfere with the speed of the whole torrent (as unconnectable users are downloading from connectable ones sharing their bandwidth without contributing anything themselves) and it will also damage their ratio (as their chances of uploading to other users and seeding back the torrent are negligible)

So what can you do? You need to configure your router and/or firewall to open ports for your torrent client. You will find lots of information on the subject at PortForward.com.

Also note that your connectable listing on the site may malfunction at times. If you are looking in your profile, it displays your connectable status depending on if you have any active torrents at that time. If you know for a fact that your connectable, then it may just be a site error. The easiest way to reset it if it is a glitch is to stop all your ST torrents and restart them.

If you need further help getting connectable, please make use of the forums.

  • Stats - Top

Why are my stats not updating?

    • You're using a dodgy client. (Click Here to see our recommended client section.)

    • The server might be overloaded or temporarily down, don't hammer it with manual announces, just wait until it's back up and your stats will update correctly.

    • You may not be connectable (please see Why am I not connectable and does it matter?).

    • Your port may not be forwarded correctly (please see How do I forward my ports on my router? or Portforward.com).

May I use any bittorrent client?

No, not at all. You are restricted to using the following clients:

    • Bittornado (TorrentFlux),
    • BitRocket,
    • Deluge Torrent,
    • LibTorrent (rTorrent),
    • Transmission,
    • Azurerus 2.5.4 or later
    • uTorrent 1.7.6 or later (1.6.1 is still allowed)
    • Halite

Any other clients are BANNED, including but not limited to the following:

    • Bitcomet
    • BitTorrent (Get a real client already...)
    • BitTyrant
    • uTorrent (versions below 1.7.6 with the exception of 1.6.1)
    • Azureus (versions below 2.5.4)
    • BT Plus
Also all Alpha and Beta clients are not allowed until tested by a Staff member.

NOTE: Be sure to disable DHT and Peer Exchange in your torrent client, as those features are only to be used on public trackers, not private trackers like ST. By leaving these features on, you are sending data to users NOT on the site and it does not get counted towards your stats. You're hurting your ratio and transfer speed as well as the download speeds of others by keeping these options on.

Why is a torrent I'm leeching/seeding listed several times in my profile?

If for some reason (e.g. pc crash, or frozen client) your client exits improperly and you restart it, it will have a new peer_id, so it will show as a new torrent. The old one will go away in a few minutes, don't worry. This can also sometimes occur when you've finished or exited a torrent, but this usually happens with dodgy clients.

You can use the 'flush torrents' link at the top of your profile (click your name at top left) to flush torrents (doesn't always work though!). If flushing your torrents doesn't work you will just have to wait a while until the system clears it eventually. Do not contact staff about this problem, we can't do anymore then you can.

How does NAT/ICS change the picture?

If you use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), you should run the torrent client from the computer that connects directly to the internet (it's the ICS gateway). Clients running on the other computers will be unconnectable (being unconnectable was explained here) unless you specify the appropriate services in your ICS configuration (a good explanation of how to do this for Windows XP can be found here).

In the NAT (Network Address Translation) case you should configure different ranges for clients on different computers and create appropriate NAT rules in the router. (Details vary widely from router to router and are outside the scope of this FAQ. Check your router documentation and/or post on the Hardware Support Forum.)

    Uploading - Top

Why can't I upload torrents in the main section?

Only selected personnel (Uploaders) have permission to upload torrents in the main section, this is because they meet special requirements, see here for more info.

What criteria must I meet before I can join the Uploader team?

You will need to meet one of two requirements before you even think of applying:

    1) You are able to provide scene releases. If you don't know what this means then you can't provide them. If you can provide them you don't necessarily need to meet the next requirement.
    2) You'll also need a minimum upload speed of 10mbit (1 MegaByte Per Second).
    3) If you meet the requirements, Please feel free to contact sickie.

Can I upload your torrents to other trackers?

Hell No. Feel free to seed them on other trackers but you do not have permission to upload them elsewhere. Anyone caught doing so will be warned/banned. This rule also includes uploading our INTERNAL releases (the ones marked with -ST at the end) to other trackers.

    Is pornography allowed?

Yes! Viewing the XXX category is disabled by default, you can enable it here. However, there are a few exceptions: no bestiality porn, no scat/Xtreme category, no snuff/necro, no rape (that includes rape fantasy) and no child porn. Any users caught uploading child pornography will be reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline. If you're not sure if something is allowed, please speak to a moderator to see first.

    Downloading - Top

That torrent disappeared from the site!?

Torrents don't just disappear! The torrent may have been deleted, the reason can vary. It might be dead (0 seeds, 0 leechers). Dead torrents are deleted automatically after 3 days of no activity. The file may be nuked (file is deemed to be 'wrong' in some way and not worth downloading so we deleted it). Also, the uploader may have made a mistake, in which case a replacement will most likely be coming. Please do not contact staff regarding missing torrents, we will not do anything about it.

I am not sure how to use this file type!

Here is a list of files you will commonly come across on SuperTorrents:

    .rar WinRaR

This is probably THE most common file you'll find on SuperTorrents. It's basically a compressed file, much like a .zip file. Why do things come rard up instead of just as one file? This question is answered in another section here.

So how do you open it? Visit rarlabs and download the program WinRaR.

Great! Now what? Now that you have WinRaR, you can 'extract' the files. For TV, Games and Movies simply right click on any of the .rar files and choose 'extract here' to extract the files in whatever folder they are currently in or 'extract files...' and choose a different location.

REMEMBER TO KEEP THE .RARS FOR SEEDING! You can't seed the files that come out of the .rars, you have to keep the .rars to continue seeding.

Note that in Apps sometimes you get .zips inside of .rars, don't know why they do that but sometimes it happens. You'll probably need to extract each rar individually this time (there's usually only about 4 or so) and then sometimes do the same with the .zips. Remember for TV, Games and Movies you only need to pick one rar to extract and you'll get all the files inside.

    .bin / .cue Daemon ToolsNero

These files nearly always come together (except for music, that will be explained soon). Essentially the .bin contains all the data from a CD/DVD and the .cue is like an index list, telling a program how it's all ordered.

These files are usually quite versatile - you can 'burn' them or 'mount' them in most cases (sometimes you HAVE to burn).

Burning simply means using a program like Nero to burn the files to disc. Note that to burn you point Nero to the .cue file rather than the .bin file.

Mounting means using the .bin and .cue as an image - like a pretend CD/DVD on your computer. Your computer thinks that it's a real CD/DVD and you don't have to burn it. You'll need a program like Daemon Tools.

What about mp3s with .cues? This occurs when the CD is mixed. It is not a mistake. The reason for a single mp3 is because if you split it into individual mp3 tracks, then there will be gaps in playback when it should be mixed flawlessly. However you can use the .cue file to burn it as separate tracks (the resulting cd is split into separate tracks but still 'mixes' perfectly) or you can use a tool such as CueSplitter to split the mp3s.

    .nfo Damn NFO Viewer

.nfo files are information files. How clever. They basically contain information about the files you've downloaded. For films you'll get an imdb link, video quality, audio quality etc. You can open them with Wordpad or even Notepad (right click and choose open with..) but we recommend using Damn NFO Viewer.

    .sfv Quick SFV

.sfv files are like a checklist - they check that the files you have just downloaded are authentic (like they originally were when the first person created them). This ensures that you don't get any fake crap. Get a program like Quick SFV to use them.

How do I resume a broken download or reseed something?

Most clients nowadays will auto-resume for you. Re-seeding something simply involves opening the .torrent file from the site again and most clients will find the files for you and begin seeding. If your client doesn't find it for you, simply find the option that allows you to show the client where it is.

In fact most clients store the .torrent file for you now and all you have to do is click a start/stop button. Simple!

What are these "a piece has failed an hash check" messages?

Sometimes you receive some data that's bad - it doesn't meet what the torrent expects it to be. As long as this isn't happening a lot, you have no reason to worry, most torrents have a few kb of bad data sent between downloaders.

Some clients have an (advanced) option/preference to 'kick/ban clients that send you bad data' or similar. You should turn this on if its available, this will stop you connecting to people that are constantly sending you bad data.

The torrent is supposed to be 100MB. How come I downloaded 120MB?

This is related to the previous question - when data fails a hash check you have to re-download it. So technically you can download more data than the total file size should be.

Why do I get a "rejected by tracker - Port xxxx is blacklisted" error?

Your client is reporting to the tracker that it uses one of the default bittorrent ports (6881-6889) or any other common p2p port for incoming connections.

SuperTorrents does not allow clients to use ports commonly associated other p2p programs. Why? Well ISPs have tended to 'throttle' these ports (limit speeds) so it's for your own good and the good of the community :)

    The blocked ports list:

    Direct Connect
    411 - 413
    Kazaa
    1214
    eDonkey
    4662
    Gnutella
    6346 - 6347
    BitTorrent
    6881 - 6889

In order to use SuperTorrents, you'll need to configure your client to use a different port(s). Some clients like uTorrent and Azureus use only a single port whereas Bittornado and Bittorrent use a range.

Changing your ports won't create any hassle for you if you use other trackers, in fact it will benefit you as speeds will probably increase. Also note that you can still connect to others regardless of what port they are using.

There really is no special set of ports that work best, but people to tend to go for 40000-60000.

Finally, remember to forward the chosen ports in your router and/or firewall, assuming you have a router and firewall that is. See the Why am I listed as not connectable?  section and links therein for more information on this.

What is a "Hit-and-run" (HnR) and what can I do to avoid this?

A "hit-and-run" is considered leeching a torrent and ending it within 48 hours without reaching a 1:1 ratio. You do not have to seed the torrent consecutively for 48 hours, but you must seed for a TOTAL of at least 48 hours. You should always try and seed as much as possible as you'll also improve your ratio. Any user not following this will be warned the first time, and this will be the only warning you get. After that, you're at risk of losing your account. If you would like to see the HnR torrents you have, please check the link in your profile page. The link will show you torrents you didn't reach a 1:1 ratio on, even if you seeded them for 48 hours, they will still be shown there. Be aware that you won't be warned for HnR'ing as long as you're seeding the things you download for 48 hours, or until 1:1 ratio.

How do I forward my ports on my router?

The following site http://www.portforward.com/ allows you to diagnose your port's fowarding capability and also the site will tell you how to forward your ports on your router. Please pay attention to this guide before submitting a support ticket.

What is this pre or pre-time information?

When you're browsing the torrents, you'll often see 'uploaded xx.xx after pre':

    Pre Time

'Pre' is short for 'pre-release'. The 'pre-time' also known as 'pre' is the time it takes for us to upload the content to our site once it has been released to the public on 'The Scene'.

Basically, the faster it is, the better we are :D

Where do you get these files from?

The files we bring to you come from 'The Scene'. The Scene consist of groups of people that work together to release music, tv, films etc.

The reason we use 'Scene' files is because they adhere to strict rules to ensure quality and consistency.

Lastly, no we can't hook you up, so please don't ask, but here's a further insight into 'The Scene':

The group uploads their release and 'pre' it on an ftp site that they are 'affiliated' with. These FTP sites are known as 'topsites', 'topsite rings', 'rings' or more often simply 'sites' - these are the places that the content we get is originally released, after it is released on these rings it trickles down to newsgroups, torrent sites, fxp boards, and other forms of p2p.

The moment the content is released it is said to have 'pre'd. Groups usually pre on multiple sites to ensure good propagation. After a release is pre'd it is raced across the internet to many topsites by users known as 'racers', 'couriers' or 'curries' for short. These racers recieve 'credits' depending on how much data they send e.g. they might have raced 150mb of a tv show, so they'll get 150mb worth of credits that they can use to download other stuff from the site (some sites operate on a 1:3 basis, so for uploading 150mb, you'd get 450mb to spend).

The groups that release content and the topsites all make up what is collectively referred to as "the scene". We like to keep track of this information so you know you're getting the content immediately as well as to compare our pretimes to other sites' - This, coupled with speeds and number of peers is how we compare ourselves to other sites and we're usually #1 :)

Why are the files named strangely?

The naming of files follows Scene rules, these are rules agreed by some (not all) groups and vary with category. This means that certain 'tags' are put into the naming of files.

The following are general tags you will find across all categories of torrents:
    • PROPER - This means a previous release was deemed to be bad (see nuked) and this release has sorted the problems. Note that you may also see REAL.PROPER which means someone else screwed up a PROPER!
    • REPACK - This happens when a group makes a mistake and re-releases something (they have 'repacked it').
    • iNTERNAL - This means that the release was never meant to be spread other than to the group's affiliates. This could be because it's something that's already been released (therefore it would be a dupe) or something slightly wrong with it which means it wouldn't meet Scene standards.

    Movies
"All Release directories, regardless of year, shall be named according to Movie.Name.Year.Source.Codec-Group, suggested naming for the movie itself shall follow the same procedure (i.e. Movie.Name.Year.Source.Codec-Group.avi" 'The XviD Releasing Standards 2004', The Federation Of Releasing Groups

So generally you'll find a movie named like this:

    Shinobi.2005.DVDVRip.XviD-PROMiSE

These are source tags (where the film comes from):

    • CAM - Video is from a camcorder, usually in a cinema. No joke. Audio and picture are usually bad and you may be able to hear/see the audience.
    • TS - Telesync. This is the same as a CAM, but with an external audio source
    • TC - Telecine. A telecine machines digitally copies the film from a reel. Picture and sound are usually good. Losing popularity due to R5 releases
    • R5 - Region 5. The R5 is a retail DVD from region 5. R5 releases differ from normal releases in that they are a direct Telecine transfer of the film without any of the image processing. If the DVD does not contain an English-language audio track, the R5 video is synced to a previously released English audio track. Then a LiNE tag is added. This means that the sound often isn't as good as DVD-Rips.
    • SCR - Screener. These are pre-retail VHS tapes. Usually Fullscreen with copywright warnings, some black and white scenes and a timer.
    • DVDSCR - DVDScreener. Same as VHS but on a DVD and rarely Fullscreen. Won't contain the extras and options a retail DVD would.
    • DVDRip - movie ripped from a DVD, usually a Region 1 or 2 DVD.
    • BD/BRRip - Similar to DVD-Rip, only the source is a Bluray disc. A BD/BR Rip in DVD size often looks better than a same-size DVD rip because encoders have better source material.
    • DVDR - Full DVD, sometimes with extras, although a group will prefer video quality over including extras.
    • VHSRip - Film ripped from a VHS tape.
    • PPVRip - PPVRips are Pay-Per-View videos which have been recorded from Hotel rooms/Home Cable TV/Airplanes. PPVRip is a Pay-Per-View video source.

These are encoding tags (processes for turning the source video into what we download):

    • VCD - Video CD; generally used for low quality sources like CAM
    • SVCD - Super Video CD; better than VCD due to variable bitrate and quality through using 'passes', commonly used for TeleSyncs
    • XviD - By far the most popular format for TeleCines and DVDRips (the higher quality sources). Results in great quality if done properly.
    • x264 - A format that groups use as an alternative to XviD for HD (High Definition) Rips. (Think 720p/1080p releases)

Other tags you may come across:

    • STV - Straight To Video (not released in cinemas, usually happens with crap films or material not suitable for a cinema).
    • AC3 - Surround sound 2.0/5.1 audio.
    • LiMiTED - The film has a limited release (usually under 250 cinema screens).
    • WS - Simply meaning WideScreen. Note the tag WS is usually only used if a FullScreen first.
    • FS - FullScreen movie.
    • SUBBED - hardcoded subs that can't be removed, happens often with Asian sources
    • UNSUBBED - If a release has previously been SUBBED, a newer version without subs will have this in the name.
    • DC - Director's Cut edition of the movie.
    • SE - Special Edition.
    • Unrated - Contains extras unrated by the MPAA.
    • Remastered - Generally older films that have been digitally reworked.
    • NTSC/PAL - The 2 main standards used for video across the globe. NTSC has higher fps (frames per second) than PAL but PAL has a higher resolution, so looks better. Generally, think NTSC=USA and PAL=Europe. Note that most European DVD players will play NTSC but American DVD players won't necessarily play PAL (Yay for Europe).

    TV
TV shows are generally named as follows:
    Name.Season#Episode#.Source.Codec-Group

    e.g. Lost.S03E07.HDTV.XviD-XOR

TV source tags (where the TV is captured from):

    • DSR - Digital Satellite Rip or Digital Stream Rip, the most basic of TV sources. Usually FullScreen.
    • PDTV - Pure Digital Television, the next step up from DSR and is purely digital but not at HDTV resolutions.
    • HDTV - High Defition Television, higher resolution than PDTV and is preferred where available.
    • HR.HDTV - HDTV at a higher resoultion.
    • DVDRip - Usually these are season boxsets and for more information on DVDRips, please see the Movie section above for more detail.
    • Screeners/DVDScreeners - sometimes episodes get leaked early and they'll come from these sources, see the Movie section above for more detail.

TV encoding tags (How the TV is processed into what we download):

    • XviD - By far the most common codec used for TV shows across all sources.
    • x264 - Used by groups for HR.HDTV

Why do files come in rars? They take up too much space!

Because that's how 'The Scene' packs files for starters.

Also see here for more rar information.

The Scene represents quality, and if rars=quality, then it's rars that we will provide. Rar files assure you that you're getting the original release.

Also, if something is wrong with the release (it happens sometimes, no-ones perfect!) you might only have to download one small .rar file instead of a whole movie again!

Lots of other sites use rars too, so it can help you to share elsewhere too.

But I don't have room for rars and the other files!

The simplest idea is to extract the files when you need them e.g. to watch a movie and then delete the movie after you've finished, saving the rars for seeding. Also, hard drives are so cheap, go buy an extra one :)

What do I do if my ISP blocks the downloading of .torrent files?

You have two options, you can either use the http secure website at https://supertorrents.org or you can change the extension in the url of the file you''re trying to download from .torrent to .txt and it will download as a text file.

Connection limit exceeded! You may only leech from one location at a time - What is this?

At SuperTorrents, we have several things in place to try to protect the integrity of our torrents. One of these is not allowing our users to download/seed the same torrent from more than one location.
Sometimes due to a glitch in the torrent client the server will reject your connection with the above message. If this happens you can do the following to help.
  • Exit your client
  • Go to your 'profile' page here at ST
  • Click on 'flush torrents' which is at the top of the page
  • Log out
  • Log back in
  • Keep refreshing your profile page until it says you don't have any more active torrents, i.e the "seeding" and/or "leeching" tabs have gone
  • Open up your client

  • This is the worst case scenario and you may be able to skip some of these steps. Remember that flushing your torrents is not instantaneous.

I have just changed computers, do i need to redownload my torrents in order to seed them?

No! As long as you kept the release that you downloaded, all you need to do is redownload the torrent file, and point it at the directory that holds the file.

Then it will do a hash check on it, and start seeding. If it starts at 0, or says that there are bits missing, then the chances are you got the wrong directory.

If you have moved a release to another directory, you can change the location in the client without re-downloading the torrent file. Simply Right Click the torrent (whilst stopped) select Advanced->Select Download Location... from the menu, then navigate to the directory in the File Chooser. Then after the client has finished checking it, restart the torrent!

How do I change the number of torrents I can view in the RSS feed?

For those of you who use RSS feeds for your torrents you can now change the number of torrents you see in the feed.

Go the general tab on the left hand side of the website, right-click on "Direct Download RSS" and click copy link location. You should get something like this http://supertorrents.org/rss.php?passkey=yourpasskeyhere&dd=1&limit=20

At the end of the url just edit =# where # is the number of releases you would like to list. Currently the limit is 100.

E.G. http://supertorrents.org/rss.php?passkey=yourpasskeyhere&dd=1&limit=30 would increase the number of results in your client to 30.

What is this "Free Leech (FL)" thing?

Free leech is a term we use to describe items that don't add to your total download that's factored in for your ratio. The same Hit-n-Run rules apply for FL items, they must be seeded to 1:1 and/or for at least 48 hours.

How can I tell whether my music upload qualifies as scene?

There are only a couple of checks to verify that something is scene. The first check is simple inspection. Make sure that directory containing the music files has mp3's, along with a .nfo Damn NFO Viewer, .sfv Quick SFV, .m3u Playlist and in some cases a .cue Nero and .jpg JPEG. These files are explained here.

Once you've ensured that the proper files are contained, check the .sfv using a small application called QuickSFV, available here. If it fails for any of the files, the release is corrupt or has been modified. Do not upload it as scene, you may lose your upload privileges as a result! For a closer look at the scene, read this. A full listing of current and past MP3 scene groups is contained in case you are wondering whether a group is scene.

How can I improve my download speed? - Top

    General Information

The download speed mostly depends on the seeder-to-leecher ratio (SLR), ie how many people are spreading the full file and how many are they spreading it to? New releases shouldn't be much of a problem as we have some big connections here :)

Thinking about the previous point, make sure you seed so that others will have a chance to download at a good speed, like you did.

    Limit your upload speed

Your upload speed affects your download speed in essentially two ways:
    • Bittorrent peers tend to favor those other peers that upload to them. This means that if you and your friend are downloading the same torrent and you're sending data to your friend at high speed then your friend will try to return the favor by uploading to you. So a higher upload speed will increase your download rate...
    • But this only works up to a certain point: when you receive data from your friend, you send back a small 'ACK' (acknowledgment). This lets your friend know that you've received the data and all is well. However if you're uploading at your maximum speed, there isn't any bandwidth left to send the ACKS and so your friend will stop sending. So this leads to poorer download speeds.

The end result is a trade off between these 2 points.

Your upload speed should be as high as possible without holding up the ACKS. A general rules that people use is to limit your upload speed to 80% of its maximum. This differs for everyone so you need to find out your upload speed and test it! (Remember to use max upload speed when you're ready to seed.

Some operating systems (like Windows 9x) do not deal well with a large number of connections, and may even crash. Also some home routers (particularly when running NAT and/or firewall with stateful inspection services) tend to become slow or crash when having to deal with too many connections. There are no fixed values for this, you may try 60 or 100 and experiment with the value. Note that these numbers are additive, if you have two instances of a client running the numbers add up.

Limit the number of simultaneous uploads

Isn't this the same as above? No. Connections limit the number of peers your client is talking to and/or downloading from. Uploads limit the number of peers your client is actually uploading to. The ideal number is typically much lower than the number of connections, and highly dependent on your (physical) connection.

    Just give it some time

As explained above peers favor other peers that upload to them. When you start leeching a new torrent, you have nothing to offer to the other peers and they will tend to ignore you. This can make starts slow. Your download speed should increase as you get more and more pieces to share.

Why is my browsing so slow while leeching?

If you're using up your max download or upload speed, anything else that needs the internet may become slow. That is why most clients nowadays have the ability to set a download speed limit.
